Happy vs. Productive

Happy vs. Productive

Last week I mentioned how powerful our team call with Shawn Achor the "Professor of Happiness" from Harvard was. He is Professor of Positive Psychology at Harvard University and teaches the single most popular course that Harvard has had in it's entire history. (You can learn more about him and his work at his website www.aspirant.com ). What I love about his work is that it gives scientific rigor to what most of us have known instinctively all our lives.

My mind is still reeling with the richness of what he shared with us and I just had to share another tidbit that's worth chewing on.

So often we think in terms of "If I get 'x' done then I'll be happy." or "It will feel so fulfilling when I get 'x' accomplished" or "when I achieve a certain level of productivity it will be so satisfying". In other words we've somehow had the idea embedded in our conciousness (I know I do at least) that productivity, achievement or success is a precursor to being happy. Well, some of Shawn's most recent research shows almost the exact opposite to be true.

They took a group of 4-year-olds and divided them into two groups. Each child was given the task of arranging some blocks in a certain way. The first group was simply assigned the task and went to work. The second group was asked to first think of their happiest moment and then they were given their task. The startling result was that the second group was shown to achieve a successful result much faster. In fact, they were shown to be 50% more productive than the first group in terms of both speed and accuracy.

What was even more interesting was that they repeated this study but this time introduced an alteration with three groups of doctors. The doctors were given the very common task that physicians routinely perform of reading a patient chart and coming to an accurate diagnosis based on the data. Group A was assigned to first spend a period of time reading medical journals and then making their diagnoses. Group B was to simply go right to diagnosing the charts and Group C was to first think of something that made them feel happy and to then perform their diagnostic task. Surprisingly (or maybe not so surprisingly) Group C again performed 50% better and faster than either Group A or B.

So, you want to be more productive? Want to get more satisfaction out of what you do? Feel happy first! I'm reminded of some of the words from a hymn I was taught in church many years ago:

"Are you ever burdened with a load of care? Does the cross seem heavy you are called to bear? Count your many blessings, every doubt will fly and you will be singing as the days go by."

Choose to be happy and grateful first and watch the Law of Attraction begin to manifest in your life.

Make it an awesome day!

The Next 21 Days

The Next 21 Days

The Next 21 Days

Our team was privileged last evening to have an incredible teacher on our bi-weekly Masterminding Call. Shawn Achor is known as the "Professor of Happiness". He is Professor of Positive Psychology at Harvard University and teaches the single most popular course that Harvard has had in it's entire history. (You can learn more about him and his work at his website www.aspirant.com )

I just have one word to say about what he shared with us last night... WOW! I'll say it again... WOW!!!

There is so much I could share about what we got out of our hour and a half with him (and I'm sure I will share more shortly) but I'll share just one thing that impacted the way Sarah and I now look at our potential in relation to the results we're getting in both our business and our life. He said that his research confirms the conclusion that the great psychologist William James had come to that anyone can create a new lifetime habit by practicing it in thought and deed for 21 days. In fact, contrary to what was previously thought the brain is NOT hard-wired for hardly anything but is rather a very plastic, adaptable and self-intelligent organ. That is to say that when we practice a new thought, feeling, action, skill or whatever the brain literally re-wires itself to accomodate and make the performance of that function as easy and efficient as possible.

So, let's apply that. This means that no matter where we are at this moment in life, in the development of a business or career or in the refining of a talent or whatever we have the power to consciously choose our future now. That makes the next 21 days the most important days of our lives. So, seeing that our personal power is truly unlimited the question then becomes "What do I want?" and "What am I going to do about it?" What do you want to Be, Do and Have in the next 21 days? Now that's something to think about.

Make it an awesome day!

A Time to Live Fully

A Time to Live Fully

I love the holidays for many reasons: the cooler weather, the excitement and energy of anticipation from the young as well as the young at heart, the music, the chocolate selection at the local wholesale club. Heck, I'll admit it I even enjoy the marketing! However, yesterday we had an experience that yanked me directly into the true spirit of the holidays and offered me some powerful reminders about living and loving.

We had just completed a stressful yet enjoyable bout of shopping and were pulling onto the highway out of the parking lot of the last store on our list. My mind was so occupied with thoughts of getting home safely and efficiently through the traffic, feeding a tired and hungry family of five and getting them into bed that I didn't pay attention to the man on the side of the road with a small cardboard sign that read "NEED HELP". I noticed him briefly, but I didn't pay attention to him. But Brian Jr., our seven-year-old, did. He instantly cried out, "It says 'help, help'! That man's sign says 'help, help'! We need to help him! Dad, stop! We need to help him!"

So, we immediately pulled back into the parking lot at the first opportunity, drove back through some traffic, and thought for a moment that we had lost him. We then spotted him a couple of rows away and parked safely while Brian Jr. burst out of the car, ran over to him, gave him a ten dollar bill, three chocolate truffles and a smile. As he ran back we saw the biggest smile on his face as he half ran, half skipped back to the car clapping his hands and literally jumping for joy.

What makes this all the more interesting to me is that this is the same boy that just a few minutes earlier was feeling very unhappy (after all, it had been a long day). Now, this same boy had found boundless happiness and energy.

This experience carries a couple of lessons or reminders for me:

1. Selfless service brings joy. There was no thought in my son's mind but serving that man and the instant he focused on filling the need of another his own discontent vanished;
2. Following our true north brings joy. How often do we hold back, play small and in general fail to live fully for fear of what someone else may think or say when our conscience is urging us to act on our true desires. Again, this was not a consideration for our boy. He wasn't worried about what all the onlookers thought, didn't come up with excuses for why it's inconvenient or not the right time or place. There was a need and he knew he could fill it, therefore he did.

Now, I don't think this experience is unique to us. I'm confident this scene is played out by children all over the world every day. No wonder it's been said of children, "Of such is the kingdom of heaven."

May we all have the courage, conviction and commitment to do our part, to fill the needs that we see in the world with the gifts that we've been given, to play full out with the precious time we have.

Happy Holidays! - Brian and Sarah Gwyn, goldMind group
